Food Question! [Sep. 18th, 2009|01:34 am]
Hartford LiveJournal Community

Anybody have any favorite/notable/awesome places they'd recommend to eat in Connecticut. I'll be driving from NY to Groton, CT, and wouldn't mind making a stop over for some killer food rather than the usual fast food/rest station stuff you usually grab when you're on the road. Not too pricy as most of my band usually save their money for instruments and booze ;) Rock on, Rainbow Blight

As everyone makes their August plans, I wish to remind you to consider attending Pi-Con! Pi-Con is a weekend-long celebration of science fiction and other fan interests - there's webcomics, science, costuming, gaming, larping, filk, lifestyle, and lots more. This year, it's happening August 21-23 in Enfield, CT right off 91, just south of the MA border. Register today!

This year will feature Author Guest of Honor Mary Doria Russell (award winning author of The Sparrow and Children of God), Webcomic Guest of Honor Jeffrey Rowland (creator of Wigu, Overcompensating, and the awesome t-shirt site Topatoco), and Guest of Awesome Genevieve Iseult Eldredge. We will also see the return of our video game room, two full rooms of all day board/card/table top gaming, many favorite panels and events including the panel in the pool, and the new addition of Filk programming! There will also be performances by our local Rocky Horror and Repo casts (The Come Again Players and Genetic Imperfection)

Full weekend pre-registration rates for Pi-Con are currently $40 for adults or only $25 for students! Get your registrations in at the early rate!

Room reservations are *open* for Pi-Con! Room rate will be $109/night + tax. Just go to http://www.pi-con.org/hotel.php and you can register online for a room (note: Discounted room rate ends August 10th, reserve soon!).

Moving! [Jul. 15th, 2009|10:35 am]

[mood |curiouscurious]

Hi everyone!

So my family and I are thinking of moving to CT, specifically Hartford or New Haven.
However, right now we're in Canada, so we don't know a whole bunch about the area or the process of moving. Hence, doing some research!

What I'm looking for from LJ is for anyone to tell me the pros and cons of CT.
What do you like about it, what sucks?
How's public transportation?
How about the music scene/concert availability (we're metalheads)?
Are the schools good? (Primary all the way up to University - I have 2 kids that will be starting soon!)
Jobs? My husband does sheet metal (HVAC), so he's "skilled", and I know the economy is still kinda sucky, but are there any jobs at all? lol
Shopping - where do you like to shop?

Basically, anyone who wants to give me their 2c about the area is awesome and will be much appreciated

Thanks in advance <3

Help out a UConn Student [Feb. 14th, 2009|07:25 am]
Hartford LiveJournal Community

Event Info
Concerned students of Uconn
Time and Place
Wednesday, March 4, 2009
4:00am - 6:00pm
Student Union Ballroom 330
Storrs, CT
Over Christmas break, Uconn police intercepted an email threatening the safety of Uconn student Andrew G. They felt the threat was credible enough to immediately alert the local police. Though both have let Andrew know his safety is in danger while he is on the UConn campus, neither will grant him permission to view this threat. Nor have any steps been implemented to keep Andy from being harmed by this people. If the police would let him view the email, he may be able to tell them who is sending it.

Next time, you may be the one who is repeatedly threatened with being attacked on campus while the police and university look the other way, thinking that telling you something like "hey you're in significant danger of possibly getting beaten into a coma" is adaquate measure to keep you safe.

Show up on March 4 to show the university, and Andy, that you won't settle for ignoring the safety of UConn students. Bring snacks and the like to share. Once the crowd gathers, we'll order pizza. Carrying signs is a definate plus. Have afternoon class? Let your professors know, you are taking time off from class because you care about the safey of every student on campus, even if the university doesn't.
